What is the Internet?

Before reading any of the assigned articles, I tried to answer this question myself. It ended up being a lot more complicated than I had anticipated. To me, the internet is a place to catch up with old friends, watch movies, get homework help, post pictures, look up random facts, and it’s how I go to class now. The possibilities are virtually endless.

I’m of the generation where I don’t really remember a time when there wasn’t an internet. I grew up watching it expand into what it is today. In present day, I can’t really imagine life without it because it is so integrated into my life, especially now with covid. The internet has enabled me to stay in touch with friends and family members, go to class, and stay informed about what’s going on in the outside world, all while staying physically distanced from others.

But, while I use the internet for innocent tasks, others can use it to steal private information. I have some friends that are software engineers and professional hackers, and sometimes it scares me how easily they say it is to get into other people’s data. That is one of the scariest things about the internet to me.

Overall, I think the internet is a good thing, and I think that it will be interesting to see how it grows and evolves more and more in the coming years.
